Facebook has been hit with another huge fine by the Irish data watchdog.
Meta was fined $276 million in Ireland over a data breach that exposed the phone numbers and other personal data of more than five hundred million Facebook users. The Data Protection Commission's penalty brings the total amount of fines owed to Ireland by Facebook's parent since last year to more than nine hundred million. For years, the story went that Meta deliberately chose to locate in Ireland at the time because privacy laws there were quite lenient.
